Are we missing the bigger picture?

Today, artificial intelligence is woven into nearly every sector, pushing boundaries and offering new capabilities at an astonishing rate. From language models that can answer complex questions to computer vision that enables everything from waste sorting to weed elimination, AI is making headlines for its prowess in solving intricate tasks. These advancements are undeniably exciting and a testament to AI’s potential. But as we celebrate these technical feats, a critical question arises: Are we missing the bigger picture?

While AI’s applications in fields like customer service, content generation, and industrial automation are impressive, they tend to overshadow the deeper, more transformative role that AI could play in addressing some of humanity’s most urgent challenges. AI is uniquely positioned to create large-scale impact in areas that need it most, such as public health, climate resilience, food security, and biodiversity conservation (1,2). Yet, despite their promise, many of these “AI for Good” projects remain under-publicized, and, perhaps most importantly, under-supported.

The current dilemma: Limiting true potential

Most discussions around AI in almost every media often zero in on trending applications like large language models (LLMs) and other consumer-facing AI tools. While these innovations certainly showcase AI’s ability to enhance specific tasks, they risk masking the broader potential AI holds for societal transformation. We’re seeing groundbreaking AI initiatives address profound issues—from predicting natural disasters to improving agricultural yields in food-scarce regions, yet they rarely make it into mainstream conversations.

Some of these projects are already showing significant results and could be scaled to benefit millions, but they face a unique set of challenges. Without greater awareness and public support, many risk stalling or failing to reach the impact they’re designed to have. There are instances of government fundings for AI projects being shelved, causing these projects to halt. That is why, now more than ever, there is an urgent need for people who understand AI’s true potential to get involved, advocate for, and help grow these initiatives. And only by expanding our focus beyond the popular applications we can unlock AI’s full potential to create meaningful lasting change.

Collaborative Pathways Forward

For AI for good to reach its full potential, we need more than isolated efforts—we need a community of advocates, active collaborators, and cross-sector partnerships. Realizing the benefits of AI for social impact demands that private companies, governments, nonprofits, and citizens all come together to address complex global issues with a shared sense of purpose and responsibility. Here are some ways you can actively participate and some pathways for creating meaningful collaboration across sectors.

Collaboration Across Sectors: Uniting Private, Public, and Nonprofit Resources

To tackle grand challenges, organizations from different sectors must leverage their unique strengths and resources. When private companies contribute advanced technology and research expertise, nonprofits bring community insight, and governments establish the regulatory framework, impactful and sustainable solutions can be developed. Here are a few examples and suggestions on how these partnerships can work.

An example of one such collaborative project of ours is the Marine Litter Project. In the infancy of our project we collected sample data and analyzed them on a desktop computer, which would not be able to create an impact that we are about to deliver. At our current stage, we have been working collaboratively with agencies and organizations not just to share data or use computational power but to make the best use of it. We are collaboratively working with Free The Sea to make use of our machine-learning capabilities to deliver information on the most suitable locations of planned new collection points for marine litter to improve the efficiency of Free-The-Sea-operations. And thanks to Bechtle, we now have access to more computational power making our heavy lifting even quicker than ever.

Similarly, we have received immense support from many other collaborators in various other projects such as Five1 GmbH to implement and design cutting edge AI systems within our Project HOPE. Another example of a great collaboration is the AMIGO project that is a joint of forces of MI4People, Care for Rare Foundation, Ludwig-Maximilian University, Dr. von Haunerschen Children's HospitalCapgeminiNvidia, Neo4j, and Feature Cloud. In fact, almost every our project involves several collaborators and contributors. Moreover, we have received immense support from government agencies such as Deutsche Stiftung für Engagement und Ehrenamt, who helped us employ first staff members and Civic coding, who helped us adjust our strategies and gain more visibility.

It is with the extended hands of these organizations, institutions and agencies that we get to play a vital role in our mission of AI for Good. Many more such projects can bring out the best impact with the right support. And for any of these projects, your organization too can explore partnerships that align with your mission and resources. Whether you’re a startup, big enterprise, a nonprofit, or a public institution, building a coalition of allies amplifies impact, enabling each entity to bring their unique assets to a common goal. But it takes the right people with the right mindset to push these movements forward. And we believe you are one of them.

So, How Can You Be Part of the AI for Good Movement?

To create meaningful change, AI for good needs the awareness, support, and involvement of people like you. Whether it’s sharing innovative ideas, connecting these projects with potential supporters, or becoming actively involved, you play a vital role in helping these AI-driven solutions make a lasting impact. Here’s how you can contribute:

  • Engage with AI for Good: Follow our page to stay updated on the latest AI for good projects and startups. Engaging with organizations like ours to explore the new developments in the field allows you to stay informed about the possibilities that AI holds for social transformation.

  • Explore New Possibilities and Share: If you come across inspiring projects or have your own ideas about how AI could solve a societal challenge, share them! By discussing AI for Good initiatives with your network, you can help bring visibility to groundbreaking projects and ideas. This might even open up doors for you and your network or help other organizations to be inspired and pursue the path.

  • Support and Share: Many of these projects rely on advocates who can help expand their reach. Support by donating, volunteering, or connecting with these organizations, especially if you have skills in AI, data science, project management, or fundraising. Every bit of support brings these initiatives closer to fulfilling their potential.

  • Get Involved: Whether you’re a developer, a researcher, an investor, or an advocate, there’s a place for you in the AI for Good ecosystem. By getting involved, you can help bring impactful AI ideas to life and ensure they reach their full potential.

AI’s future impact depends on those who believe in its ability to serve the greater good and are willing to champion these goals. Your involvement, whether as a supporter, sharer, direct contributor, or donor, is key to scaling these initiatives and making sure they reach the people and communities that need them most.

Let’s step back, widen our view, and dive into the potential of AI for good. Together, we can shape a future where AI’s most important goal—serving humanity—is realized.

Thank you for being part of this journey!

With greetings
