5 Years of MI4People – From an Idea to Real-World Impact

MI4People started operating in October 2021.

Back then, we had above all one idea: Artificial intelligence should not only help companies sell products more effectively or make processes more efficient. It should also be used where societal challenges are greatest and resources are most limited.

We wanted to bring together people from technology, academia, and civil society to jointly develop AI solutions that create real social impact.

Five years later, we can say: That idea has grown into far more than we could have imagined at the time.

From Our First Volunteers to an International Community

Our first projects began in 2021 with a handful of committed people and a great deal of willingness to experiment.

Today, MI4People works with an international community of AI experts, students, researchers, nonprofits, and companies. People from many different countries and backgrounds contribute their time, knowledge, and experience to jointly research on and develop solutions for social, humanitarian, environmental, and health-related challenges.

Over the years, individual experiments have grown into numerous AI4Good projects. We have worked on AI for rare diseases, used satellite data to detect plastic pollution in the ocean, helped organizations make better use of their data, developed knowledge systems for nonprofits, and explored together with our partners how AI can support people in very different circumstances.

We also launched our highly successful KIISS program. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the European Social Fund, the program enables us to provide numerous German nonprofits and social enterprises with free AI support – from initial consulting all the way to the implementation of their own AI applications.

So, what began as an entirely volunteer-driven initiative has since evolved into an organization with professional structures, full-time employees, and long-term partnerships.

We are proud of that.

When an AI Model Creates Real-World Impact

For us, this development becomes especially tangible in one project that has accompanied us intensively over the past few years.

In Ethiopia, together with the Armauer Hansen Research Institute and the University of Applied Sciences Mittelhessen, we are working on using AI to support the interpretation of ECG recordings.

The starting point is challenging: In a country of around 130 million people, there are only about 30 cardiologists, and specialized medical expertise is often particularly scarce outside the major cities.

What initially began as a research project has now been tested under real-world conditions in nine hospitals. Medical professionals have been trained, several thousand ECGs have been collected, and together with our partners we are building a dataset that can help adapt AI systems more effectively to the local medical context.

For us, this project demonstrates what MI4People is meant to be: technology developed together with local partners and used where it is truly needed.

But Actually, Today We Are Not Celebrating MI4People

We are celebrating the people who made MI4People possible.

The volunteers who spent evenings and weekends training models, analyzing data, developing interfaces, and coordinating projects.

The nonprofits that trusted us with their challenges and explored new approaches together with us.

The researchers and partner organizations that contributed their knowledge, time, and commitment.

The companies, funding institutions, and supporters who provided us with resources, networks, and trust.

And also those who challenged us, asked difficult questions, and helped us improve.

MI4People has never been the story of just a few people. From the very beginning, it has been a community-driven idea. And after five years, there is one thing above all that we want to say:

Thank you!

Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your knowledge.

Thank you for your support.

And above all: thank you for your trust.

The First Five Years Were Only the Beginning

When we started in 2021, we first had to find out whether our approach could work at all.

Could highly skilled AI experts volunteer their time to work on societal challenges? Could nonprofits and technology experts develop good solutions together? Could prototypes actually become applications that help organizations and people in the long term?

Today, we have a much clearer answer to those questions. And we have adapted our processes accordingly so that we can create as much AI4Good impact as possible with the resources available to us.

Along the way, we have also learned one very important lesson: Powerfull AI alone is not enough to create positive impact. What matters just as much are people, local expertise, trust, open collaboration, and the willingness to keep working on difficult problems over many years.

That is exactly what we want to continue doing in the years ahead.

We want to scale successful solutions more widely. We want to support more nonprofits in using AI meaningfully and with digital sovereignty. And we particularly want to make technological opportunities accessible in places where they still reach far too few people today.

We still have a lot ahead of us. But when we look back at what has grown from a small idea in October 2021, it gives us one thing above all: tremendous confidence for the next five years.

Thank you for being part of this journey.

And now, we look ahead to the next five years of AI4Good!

Yours,

The MI4People Team
